Unfortunately on this day for words begining with U, this is not the hylocereus undata and which variety of night blooming cereus it is, I do not know. I do know that it is unusual in its blooming habits, blooming only one night, but with spectacular results. This specimen is so tall that it is now growing up through the air vent in the first floor ceiling!
Out of its natural habitat, these unbelievable blooms are rare for us. These are photos from 2005. When it does, we invite friends to stay up with us and enjoy the spectacle. An artist friend brings her watercolors for unique renderings of the bloom. I whip out my camera!
More words and photos about U words can be found on ABC Wednesday.

They are very beautiful flowers - well worth waiting for :-)
ReplyDeleteHow amazing that it blooms so infrequently! I'd be sure to have my camera handy too. :)

Wow, that's incredible!! And so tall! Can you cut it off at the topmost (visible) joint and make a new plant out of the top part? I think I'd try. Sometimes a little pruning helps to provoke growth and flowering too .. though I'm the first to admit I'm nowhere near close to being a cactus expert!
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of the team, thanks for taking part in ABC Wednesday this week! :)
Wow! That's impressing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing such nice blooming;o)
