Sun and shadow

Our card table in the nook is warmed by the sun and wood of the bright light of a February day in winter.   My cousin Tom rescued this old cherry table at least 25 years ago and restored it to its present beauty.  It began its second life as a card table in my parents' living room.  That tradition continues with cribbage, canasta, and Russian Bank mornings after breakfast.  Retirement is a tough life.

Snow sky in the morning

These December snow days create marvelous morning skies.  The sun struggles to gain a footing among the swirling fingers of lake-effect snow clouds and we are usually walking in a light dusting of snow flakes.  Today the sun won out by noon but now at 2 pm has succumbed to the pale gray clouds floating in on a northwest wind off the lake.

The Life!

My definition of "The Life" is pictured here --  lounging in the light of the rising sun on a lake (in this case, Superior,  but  your favorite body of water will do).  Other things can be added, of course, a cup of coffee (or a gin and tonic if these were rays of the setting sun), a newspaper or book, a sketch pad or camera, a cat and/or a dog, another best friend or a new friend.  But, if none of these were there, it could still be "The Life"!

The same morning as last week's sunrise over Superior but thirteen minutes later and the sun has appeared on the horizon.

New day

The sun rises but the temperatures are not -- 60 degrees this morning and the world seems clearer and less cluttered.  Certainly one less drain on the energy we need to face the day's challenges.
