Welcome!

The house finches are so happy with the milder weather!
According to scientists, the total House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) population across North America is between 267 million and 1.4 billion individuals.  Whew!  Once confined to the western United States and Mexico, they were sold in Long Island in 1940 as "Hollywood Finches" and guess what?  They escaped their cages!  Learn lots more at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

  1. Are those finches going to eat their way through all those black sunflower seeds ? I feed sunflower hearts in a feeder - otherwise the pigeons would eat them all -I quite like pigeons so I don't mind them eating some of the seed but the are quite greedy and you have snowdrops too!

  2. Jane, they have lots of competition at times, from cardinals, bluejays, juncos, chickadees, titmouses, nut hatches, you name it! Being in the country, we don't have to worry about pigeons. Thanks for stopping by!
