Apple Poster for ABC Wednesday

You are inside the  barn at the Spirit Springs Farm just across the county line from us in Cass County.  If you seek an amazing variety of apples, this is the place to come.  We have a standing order each year.  The farmer who started these orchards, filled with heritage apples, is dead, but his four daughters return every fall to pick and sell the 70 + varieties of antique and unusual apples.  One of my favorites is the Roxbury Russet, small and slightly tart but tasty.  And I found out researching for this post that the Roxbury Russet may be the oldest variety of apple in the United States, according to the website, Orange Pippin.  Click here for some interesting facts about apple production in Michigan.

By the way, speaking of P and Michigan, our new tourist industry motto is "Pure Michigan."  And for more postings on the prolific P, please pop on over to ABC Wednesday.  Thank you to Mrs. Nesbitt and her crew for pushing me every week into exploring our world!

  1. girl in the poster has a certain familiar look that I can't place. Not Doris Day, but some of her vintage, maybe.

  2. Cass county is very familiar to me. Seems like it is not very far from Oakland county? I love Michigan apples and only wish that we have it 365 days in our orchards. ^_^ Happy Wednesday!

  3. I wonder if that is one of the daughters in the poster?
Interesting - apart from being baked in a pie, I wouldn't really think of cooking apples, I must look up my old Purity cookbook and see what that offers in recipes!
and I must remember that for the next round when I need a P ;)

  4. What a great tribute to the father that his children return yearly to what seems to be an amazing orchard. Trees give such wonderful meaning to the circle of life and the continuation of a memory.

  6. Uniquely Michigan for sure. The high point of autumn for me to visit the orchards around here too.
    The poster is amazing.

  7. Roger and Violet Sky, you got me thinking and looking harder at the poster girl. I think this is a poster from the 30's or 40's and the girl looks a little like Shirley Temple to me. This same poster hangs in the Dexter Cider Mill, the oldest still-operating cider mill in Michigan, just northeast of Ann Arbor. I discovered that factoid by googling images of "Michigan Apples vintage posters."
No wonder I get so little else done....... :)

  8. Kim, Cass County is the next county west of St. Joseph where I am and is smack dab on the border with Indiana. Cass is just one county away from Lake Michigan.
AKA, your observation is so spot on!

  9. It would be wonderful to have an orchard with so many old varieties. I love russets but haven't seen them in the shops for years.

  13. There is something about this barn that gives me a feeling of nostalgia. It's beautiful and I can smell the apples.
Don't be ashamed that you don't know the facts about my country. It is a small and crowded kingdom with a 74 years old Queen and a very important harbour Rotterdam, which was some 60 years ago the first harbour in the world. I must confess that I don't know anything about the USA and that is really shameful, I suppose. I always think I google it! Google makes me lazy! ;) Have a great rest of the week and thanks for your visit.

  14. Yummy!!! There is nothing better then a good apple. I bet that father smiles down on his daughters when they are together working. What a wonderful story. :)
