Islands

Au Train Island, it is situated in Lake Superior several miles out in the Au Train Bay.  This is the view from our cottage on the smaller Shelter Bay about 13 miles west of Munising, Michgian.  Our mornings here have been marvelous shows of clouds and light as the sun is coming up just to the east of the island.  The shore of Shelter Bay is all rocks, of sizes from immense to tiny, while Au Train Bay is miles of white sand beach.
And behind the waves at Miners Castle Beach, in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore just east of Munising, is a view of Grand Island, once owned by Cleveland Cliffs Mining Co and now a National Recreation Area in the Hiawatha National Forest.

The lake and forest, rocks and light, inspire great love and respect in me for the nature of the north.

  1. Wow! Yes what a fantastic photo of the lake - I remember learning about this lake at school, many years ago. Who would have thought I would be looking at it here! Amazing technology eh?

  2. Impressive lake shots!! I laughed at the Wrigley sign on your barn. We have transplanted Chicago friends who live near Kalamazoo and call their place Blue Line Farm (like the Chicago train line) and have El Signage.

  5. LOVE Miner's Beach! Took my very first (and very fast) swim in Lake Superior there.

  6. I think we forget that there are islands NOT in the Caribbean that are spectacular. This is certainly one of them.

  7. Thank you all for the comments on the Lake Superior photos. For those who have never been here, sure wish you could experience its grandeur. Pam, our first swim in Superior was at the other end, the Porkies, but we have floated in the top warm water of Miner's Castle Beach. It is the best!
Our internet connection comes and goes with no rhyme or reason but glad it is with us now!
